Flash Fiction - The Intergalactic Gold Ball

Jackson wasn’t fazed by the ear-shattering music meant to confuse and distract the competitors on the 3-Level 3D Tennis Championship Monitors.  Jackson, a 10 Star Tennis Jockey vying for his fourth consecutive Intergalactic Gold Ball Championship was in full focus on the match.  A former pro tennis player on Earth, he loved playing from the Floating Tennis Control Chair in his living quarters on the Cosmos 18 Interstellar Space Station where, in spite of the climate control, he was dripping wet as he quickly grabbed his 30 oz electrolyte drink from the coaster next to the control panel, and took a huge gulp. 3

Jackson pounced when he saw Bruno - his nemesis since their near fistfight on an Earthbound tennis court 50 years ago in 2020 - moved left.  Jackson went for the kill shot to Bruno's right but miss-hit it in his excitement, and Bruno's move was only a fake anyway as he darted to his right.  2

Bruno pounded a scorching forehand crosscourt up to the third deck of the 3D screen. Jackson anticipated it, got there in time, and feathered delicate drop shot to catch Bruno off guard.  But, Bruno was lightning fast and got to the dropper just before the second bounce. Jackson, adrenaline-rushing, anticipated a short crosscourt down to the first deck, but Bruno surprised him by throwing up a moon high down the line still on the third deck and it was Jackson who was caught off guard, off-balance, and wrong-footed. 4

Jackson tripped, disentangle his feet to change directions, and jumped up, stumbled again, but kept upright as he sprinted to where he projected the ball would land after bouncing. By sheer force of will and innate athleticism, he got there and got his racket under the ball inches before it landed. With no time to think, he took a violent slice swing hoping to underspin his backhand crosscourt and down to the second level close to the baseline.   Bruno bolted after it, missed it by a millimeter, and the Gold Ball Intergalactic 3D Tennis Championship was Jackson’s again.  4

The Jackson on the 3D monitor was laying on his back with a big smile.  The Jackson, in his Floating Tennis Control Chair, picked his electrolyte drink up from the coaster and took a deep breath and long drink... still sweating.  And, also smiling.3
